Welcome to Kanaka

Rooted in Culture.

Focused on Community.

Kanaka really started because we noticed a huge gap. There just weren’t enough ways for Indigenous and Polynesian folks to actually dig into their own roots, learn the history, or just share what makes their culture theirs. The whole thing was kicked off by three people who wanted to change that, and their own backgrounds are basically the blueprint for how Kanaka treats community. You have Jennifer Corral, who comes from a Hawaiian background; Seiuli Fa’auliulito Meni-Trood, who is Samoan; and Analyssa Luna, who is Mexican. They saw that culture needs a home, a place where it isn’t just something you read about in a book, but something you actually do and teach to the next generation.

So, they put together this mix of arts, education, and community programs, even looking at ways to help people out economically. The goal is simple, even if the work is big: help people feel solid in who they are, give them the tools to make their own choices, and get the community talking to each other. It all comes back to this one idea that when you have cultural knowledge and a bit of creativity, you end up with a community that is actually empowered. It is about making sure these traditions don’t just sit on a shelf, but actually stay alive and well.
