When people think of Rwanda<\/strong>, they often picture its famous national parks and wildlife. But the real magic of this country begins the moment you leave the city and enter the countryside. Rwanda is lovingly known as the \u201cLand of a Thousand Hills<\/strong>,\u201d and it\u2019s one of the most beautiful and well-kept landscapes in Africa.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Rolling green hills stretch in every direction, covered in neatly terraced farms, banana groves, tea plantations, and small villages. The countryside feels incredibly lush, orderly, and alive. As you drive through the hills, the landscape reveals itself in layers. Vibrant green terraces climb up steep slopes, creating beautiful patterns across the hillsides. Scattered among them are banana groves and tea plantations that produce some of the finest crops in East Africa. In the distance, you may catch glimpses of lush forests like Nyungwe, one of Africa\u2019s oldest rainforests, or scenic lakes and river valleys that add to the peaceful, almost storybook quality of the drive.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Farming is at the heart of daily life in Rwanda\u2019s countryside. Most families work small plots of land, carefully tending crops of beans, maize, bananas, and vegetables on the terraced hills. Coffee and tea are also important cash crops, and many people work on plantations or grow them on their own farms. In the mornings and late afternoons, it\u2019s common to see people walking along the roads carrying goods on their heads \u2014 baskets of vegetables, bunches of bananas, or bundles of firewood \u2014 heading to local markets or returning home. These markets are lively gathering places where fresh produce is bought and sold, and they offer a wonderful glimpse into everyday rural life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What surprises most guests is how clean and well-maintained everything feels. The roads are good, the villages are tidy, and the people are genuinely warm and welcoming. The countryside here has a calm, gentle beauty that feels very different from the classic savanna landscapes of Kenya or Tanzania. Even though life revolves around farming and caring for the land, there is a strong sense of community and pride in the way villages are kept.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The last Saturday of every month, Rwanda observes Umuganda, a national day of community service. From 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., citizens come together to clean streets, repair roads, plant trees, and maintain their neighborhoods. This monthly tradition is one of the main reasons Rwanda is known for being exceptionally clean and well-kept. While guests are not required to participate, you may notice quieter roads and communities working together if your visit falls on an Umuganda Saturday.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Whether you\u2019re heading to Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee trekking and canopy walks, or driving toward Akagera National Park for Big Five game drives, the journey through Rwanda\u2019s hills is an unforgettable part of the experience. Many of our guests say the countryside itself \u2014 with its rolling green hills, hardworking people, and peaceful atmosphere \u2014 becomes one of their favorite memories. It\u2019s a land of quiet beauty, rich biodiversity, and incredibly hospitable people \u2014 a perfect complement to the wildlife adventures that await.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
